No matter what you think, or how it’s portrayed in popular culture, the ability to sell yourself is not something that only extroverts can do. It’s actually a skill that anyone can learn and hone with practice, discipline, and the right knowledge.

Consider this article your cheat sheet on all things sales related. You’ll learn about top 3 things that make a great salesperson (and an even better client for them.) And if you’re lucky, maybe someone will hire you after reading this! I won’t directly answer “how do I become a successful salesman” but I hope to give some insight into what traits are needed so you know where to focus your efforts.

If you want to sell someone (yourself or your product,) you have to understand how they are feeling. What are their concerns? Why aren’t they buying? Are they price sensitive? If you can get in the right mindset, then you’ll be able to overcome these objections and help your customer feel comfortable moving forward with their purchase decision.

 

If it seems like all of your customers are stuck on price, maybe it’s time to experiment with a different sales approach. Maybe offer an exclusive discount or involve them in a unique experience that will make them feel special. Find out what works for your product or service by talking to potential buyers before making any committed changes to try and increase revenues.

William D King says, this point goes hand in hand with the first. If you’re impatient, you’re likely to charge ahead with your sales pitch without truly understanding what they want or need. Or worse, you’ll assume that because you know so much about your product or service, why they would ever buy from someone else?  Best case scenario, your customer will pick up on this and feel like they aren’t being taken seriously which can be a huge turn off. Instead of reading the herd mentality articles on how to be more successful by emulating others, take it upon yourself to study different sales techniques and figure out what works best for you and your company.

This ties into another popular topic– copy cats are losers. It’s great to learn from other people’s success but not at the expense of your own original work. Nobody wants to be the second best at anything. Best case scenario would be to get inspired and create something new or take an existing idea (maybe one that you’ve already tried unsuccessfully) and re-envision it in a way that’s fresh and better than the last attempt.

If you’re in sales, then chances are you’re going to have a lot of presentations, meetings, proposals, pitches, etc. in your future. There’s no way around being able to communicate clearly but when it comes down to making a great first impression there are some very important factors that will make or break your success rate. In addition to having a creative mindset when it comes to selling an idea, it’s also important to have the right attitude.

Don’t be too cocky or overly confident says William D King, even if you are certain that your product or service is superior. You’ll want to exude a sense of calm and receptivity so that it doesn’t seem like you’re pushing them into something they don’t want. If overconfidence isn’t your thing, then just try being happy! Your prospective client may not consciously pick up on this but subconsciously, their brain will register how someone makes them feel which could either encourage them to try out what you’re offering or run for the hills because they can trust you.
